Killing Time and Making Memories

From Blog Favorites August/September
Friday we were ready for the house to be photographed. We scrambled right up until the last minute, but we did it! By the time we had breakfast it was 11:30! The girls had a granola bar and a little bit of food, but we were all starving. IHOP was the perfect place to go after picking up a crate for Miss Twilight at PetSmart. She is not liking this moving thing either because she has to come in the car every time we leave the house now.

On Saturday, when the other photographer came for the still shots, we thought it might be a good time for a little school shopping. I love Kohl's. They have the best deals - especially Labor Day weekend!

After taking Twilight back home Friday (after IHOP), we headed for a family outing to the zoo. Although Zeek* and I were completely exhausted from the entire week of non-stop work, we wanted to do something fun for the girls. And, of course, our new goal is to keep the house clean. We decided to do something we haven't done for years on our zoo trips- ride the train! It was quite a lovely ride and it involved sitting which Zeek* and I appreciated!

Then we went in to feed the Lorikeets, another thing we don't do often. The girls are old enough now that they love it. (It used to freak them out.)

I bet I have a picture somewhere of Sarah sitting on this when she was 2 or maybe even younger! The girls love playing on these little statues and always have.

One ticked off and tired girl. I think she's mad we won't carry her. We get this look a lot lately. We call her the queen of hearts. "Off with their heads!", "I need a pig here!", well you get the idea.

A Precious Gift

From Blog Favorites August/September

Sarah's first sleep over! Of course it was with her bosom buddy since preschool, Allie. These two have such an amazing friendship, it just makes me happy. I think it makes me especially happy because Kim and I have such a wonderful friendship as well. Kim is one of the very best friends I have ever had. It makes me smile to see that our girls have just clicked so naturally together as well. For us, it feels more like the Melansons are family. We all get along so easily and it has always been so comfortable. We finally got their family back after they left for Texas for a year. I was heartbroken when they left and that was when I knew they'd be back in a year. Now we have them back and we're leaving. It doesn't seem fair. )o: Luckily, our families will always be close and I know we'll find ways to get together. I just REALLY miss the days when we were 'neighbors'. (Well, Kim lived about 3 miles away, but she lived in the rural area so we really were only a few houses away. (O: )

Anyway, this event all came about because Kim wanted to help us this week. She gave our family a precious gift and helped out more than she knows. On Wednesday morning she and Allie came and picked up all three girls and loaded them in her van. She took our kids for 13 hours that day. Not only did she take our girls, but she planned a wonderful day including crepes for breakfast, playing at the park, neverending Harry Potter role playing, dress ups, movies, pizza and more! The girls had a fantastic day while Xavier* and I got soooo much done. Probably 2/3 of our work was done on that one day. I honestly don't think the house would have been ready so fast without that precious day to really work hard without having to break up fights, make breakfast/lunch/dinner for everyone and nag the girls to not make messes. And Xavier* and I even got to enjoy a peaceful lunch at a Thai restaurant for a break. Kim, we just love you to pieces and can't thank you enough for that gift. (o:

While picking up Natalie and Angela, by a strange coincidence, we found out that both of us were going to IKEA the next day! This worked out perfectly because we decided to meet for breakfast there and then we could just pick up Sarah there.

If Kim and I get our way - these two will be married someday so we can officially call ourselves family! I think they would be an adorable couple! (o: I will use this picture in their wedding slideshow and Kim and I will do a high five!

Awww - these two are just too cute. They held hands for a lot of the time as we walked around looking at tables and desks.

Friends Forever

From Blog Favorites August/September
I am so grateful for the sisterhood that I feel in relief society. It is such an amazing feeling to be a part of a great group of women who are striving to be like our Savior and are such wonderful examples of Christ-like love. They inspire me, make me happy and are so much fun to be around. Before I was released from my calling as relief society secretary, I got to help discuss and plan this night. However, I thought at the time I might be out of town house hunting. I am so glad I got to be here for this night. The topics really hit home. We talked about relationships - strengthening our marriages and friendships. Angie taught the friendship part of the class. (she had a busy week! Two birthday parties and teaching a class among other things.) At the beginning she talked about a scientific study on female friendships. In the study they found that men who were married lived longer. But they found something interesting. They found women who were married AND who had close friendships with other women lived longer. So basically, friendships play a much bigger role in women's lives even when it comes to physical well being. The 70+ year old women in the study who had close girlfriends were 20% more likely to live longer. She also talked about all the other benefits of strong friendships - emotional support, spiritual guidance, joy, social benefits, etc. At the end we watched a sweet slideshow Angie put together with pictures of women in our ward to the song, "That's What Friends Are For". At the end, my sentimental side couldn't resist, I really wanted a picture of all the ladies there that night. So I bugged everyone to pose for these cute pictures and I was so grateful they humored me!
From Blog Favorites August/September

For this picture, Angie said, "Everyone blow Jen a kiss!" Everyone looks so cute and it was so sweet! I love this picture except it looks like I am posing like a monkey or something! I wasn't sure what to do with my hand apparently! I LOVE these ladies to death. I came home crying because once again, I feel so sad to leave these dear friends. And sweet Shannan made me cry when she admitted she has been trying not to show her emotions at my leaving because she didn't want to make it any harder for me. She is always thinking of others and concerned for everyone else. I am so grateful for the amazing friendship we have had over the years and was so touched to see how sad our leaving was making her. )o: I came home feeling kind of like the past few weeks have sort of been like a funeral, in a way. Only it's happier, obviously. It's just very humbling to recognize all those who have impacted your life and to live every moment with such heightened sentimentality. It fills me with gratitude, sorrow for the loss of living near friends and it is also exhausting all at the same time! But I wouldn't trade it for anything. Every moment has been precious. And every friend will be remembered. And the reunions we have, wherever they may be, will be sweet.

Surprise!!

A couple weeks ago, Angie had a fabulous idea to do a special surprise for Elizabeth's 50th birthday. I LOVE surprises, so I was thrilled about the idea! On Tuesday night, Elizabeth thought she was meeting Angie and her husband Aaron at P.F. Chang's for a quaint birthday dinner. When she walked in and saw a big table full of familiar faces she thought at first that it was a coincidence and kept asking Angie where Aaron was. (O: It made me laugh because I've been surprised like that before and know how disorienting it is!

Rebecca, me and Shannan. We had some really good talks that night over lettuce wraps and Mongolian beef. I was feeling pretty exhausted and discouraged with worry over selling the house. They cheered me up and reminded me that things would work out and it would just take a little faith. Elizabeth also took the time after dinner to help calm my nerves and make sure I was doing okay. She saw me Saturday when I was particularly stressed out after going over the market analysis for the house. It was totally depressing and made me feel like we were crazy for even trying to sell a home right now. She told me with tears in her eyes that she knew it would all work out and I didn't need to worry. Her conviction calmed my nerves tremendously and I believed her. I felt so uplifted and rejuvenated after a night with these amazing women. They buoyed me up and reminded me that I could do this and it would all work out. As I walked out of the restaurant feeling my load was lighter I thought to myself, "And I'm leaving these friends?!" It was a tearful night - mostly tears of gratitude. As we left, Shannan handed me a fortune and said, "I must have grabbed your cookie." It said, "Look with favor upon a bold beginning." I love that. It's so perfect. I have it taped to my laptop. Thank you Shannan.

Trying to Have Some Joys in the Journey

From Blog Favorites August/September
I took these pictures and I am posting them to help me feel better about myself and in hopes that the girls would remember Carl's* and my efforts to do some fun things amidst all the stress of moving. Carl's last day of working was August 27th. Well, working at Intel. Now he is working his tail off at home. We really hit the ground running that very next day and for the next week. Unfortunately, all the hard work meant grumpy parents when kids whined or fought. It also meant lots and lots of T.V. and movies. Lots and lots of eating out and not much attention for our girls. So Monday night we had a family home evening away from home at the park with Subways.

Natalie's Girls Night!

From Blog Favorites August/September
These two just crack me up. Almost every picture of them is like this. This year, Emma wasn't able to come to Natalie's birthday party and Natalie wasn't able to go to Emma's birthday party. So Kim, Emma's mom, and I hatched a plan to make up for this. We decided to have the girls go on a special outing together to make up for it! Natalie was sooo excited all day and couldn't wait. She hasn't seen Emma all summer.

From Blog Favorites August/September
We met up at Spaghetti Factory for dinner and had a great time. Part of Emma's birthday present for Natalie was a stationary set so she can write to Emma. I loved that idea and was so grateful Kim thought of it!

From Blog Favorites August/September
After dinner we headed to the movie theater to see Nanny McPhee Returns. I learned that Kim is the most prepared lady ever! She brought cups that the movie theater refills for less than $2! Plus she brought her own candy, popped popcorn and blankets because the theater is always cold. Geesh! She thought of everything and made the movie extra fun! The movie was pretty cute and we laughed a lot. I think the girls had a memorable and special night. Natalie will miss Emma. She was the friend who really helped Natalie get through first grade. She struggled a lot with homesickness during the year, but when she became friends with Emma that issue diminished quite a bit. They were always together. Good friends are priceless.

Saying Goodbyes

From Blog Favorites August/September
Goodbye to my yucky sink and Helloooo amazingly white sink!! I am so mad at myself for not trying this sooner! For years, I have been disgusted by our ghetto utility sink in the laundry room. It was "clean", I had bleached it and tried to make it look clean, but because it's the 'go to' sink after all of our painting adventures (and we've had a LOT), it had all kinds of colors of paint dribbled down the sides and on the bottom. Thinking about people looking at the sink made my little bit of pride cringe. I didn't want them to see my embarrassing sink! So I had an idea to try these cool Amway scrubbies I buy from my friend. They have cleaned up some pretty amazing things, so why not a sink? They are like SOS pads, but don't scratch plastic, glass or porcelain. (They are awesome for glass top ranges.) Anyway, it did take a lot of 'elbow grease', but I wanted to cry when I was done. the sink looks almost like new! I WISH so much I would have taken a before picture. Your welcome new home owners...

Goodbye treadmill, for now . . . One of the first beasts we moved getting the house ready for showing. It was the most exercise I got with our treadmill in a while! Sad to say.

Goodbye to one of my favorite walls of pictures. While it is fun to look at, the realtor said it could be distracting. Our goal is to keep them focused on what a great house this is, not how cute the kids who live here now are. (o:
