Utah Trip Day #1 - McGriddles, Injuries, Traffic and a Huge Waterslide!

From Blog Favorites #2

It was time for another "mecca" to Utah last week! So we packed up the van and went on our trek. We really enjoy our road trips. We are so used to the 12 hour drive - it's old hat. (Although some might say we are wimpy because we always stop somewhere halfway. However, that's probably why we don't hate the drive.) Friday, July 16th, as soon as Melvin* got home from work, we finished up our packing. The girls did most of their packing under my supervision this time. It was kind of stressful and I was so worried about overseeing their packing, I did a sub-par job on my own and forgot some basics like my socks! Oh well. We then headed to Wendy's for a dinner to go and we were off!

Shortly after passing the zoo (20 minutes away), Angela asked if we were still in Oregon. (o:

Because of a later start than usual - around 7:00 p.m. - we only went to La Grande that night - 4 hours away.

The 2nd leg of the trip would be 8 hours, so we made sure to get a nice "healthy" meal to start off our long day. What better than McDonalds? McGriddles always hit the spot on a road trip.

I love this picture of Angela having a little snack later in the day. You'd never know that she had a bit of a traumatic accident at McDonalds that morning.

Angela's injuries. While scooting over on the bench at our table, she misjudged how far the seat extended out and put all her weight on one arm where there was no more bench. She slipped down and hit her lower cheek hard on the table. These external injuries looked painful enough, but the inside of her cheek where her teeth bit down looked worse. I was worried for a minute that we'd need a detour at an urgent care. Angela was a tough cookie and sucked on some ice for a few minutes. She never complained after that.

The rest of the drive was pretty normal - reading, coloring, movies and a game of "Rubber Neckers Jr." which the girls liked until Angela started getting mad that she couldn't find a church anywhere. (Too bad she didn't have that card when we were in the Salt Lake Valley!) Later in the drive, we hit some super annoying traffic in Brigham City and felt like we would never make it. We noticed that even the dragonflies were passing us as we inched along for several miles.

But at approximately 7:30 p.m., we finally pulled into Kelly's driveway and were soooo happy to get out of the car.

Natalie worked so hard on so many beautiful cards for her grandmas and grandpas. This was a picture she drew all by herself! I thought it was so cute - she must have been day-dreaming about some nice cold treats on the drive. (O: I love her imagination!

This was our wonderful treat we had to look forward to the whole drive that day and it was worth the wait! Yahoo! After sitting all day, we couldn't wait to run around and get wet with some of our most favorite people!!

There were three huge inflatables and it must have looked like Disneyland to the kids. It did to me! They were so excited.

I love this expression! This was Angela's first time down the big slide. She makes this face every time she is trying something new that seems scary, but she doesn't want to miss out. Those eyes almost pop out!

Sarah had this silly grin the entire night! It's not hard to guess how she was feeling!

I love this one - just after snapping this I cried - "Look out!"

We were in awe of Kelly and Lisa's huge backyard. Even one of these things wouldn't come close to fitting in our modest Portland backyard. Urban sprawling has it's advantages!

These last two shots were my favorite airborne pictures of the whole night. Kelly above doing his "X" formation and Natalie below doing a "Cowabunga" move!

What a fun night! As you can see in the last picture, we played well into the night. My favorite memories were seeing Melvin* and Kelly together again - these two brothers are so hilarious together. It's so nice seeing Melvin* get a chance to really just enjoy life and get a break from work. I also loved that grandma P. joined in all the fun - swimsuit or not! She went down this big old slide over and over with everyone in her jeans! I think we all felt like kids again and laughed non-stop for hours and hours. Despite some pretty crazy moves - I don't think there were too many injuries. Sore muscles and a few bruises. We also enjoyed pizza and great conversation on that warm summer night. I don't remember what we talked about, but it felt so good to be surrounded by people we love on a beautiful summer night.

Kaylynn's Pink Baby Shower

From Blog Favorites #3
Kaylynn has been my preschool teaching buddy these past two years and good friend. We also serve together now on the RS presidency. She has two cute boys and now gets to enjoy the world of pink and princesses. She had a very difficult first few months of her pregnancy and deserved some celebrating! This is her with Monica - another preschool co-op friend and friend from my old ward.

A New Hobby!

From Blog Favorites #3
One thing I wanted to do this summer is introduce scrapbooking to my girls. They are old enough now to do the cutting and glueing and arranging by themselves. Boy did they get the bug! We have scrapbooked 3 or 4 times since we started and Angela especially asks almost every day if we can scrapbook! They each have their own three ring binder and helped me pick out some fun paper at Joann's. I'm so happy to share a hobby that I love with them. Now, when they get good enough to not need my help at all, then I can start catching up on my decades of unscrapbooked pictures! (o:

Meet Anabelle

From Blog Favorites #3
This is my friend Janae's little sweetie. Janae and I worked in YW together. She is still in young women's and recently the youth had an activity doing gardening at the temple grounds. So I helped Janae with little Anabelle so she could go help out. Natalie also got to go that night with daddy since he goes to all the youth activities now. (Sidenote - Nat came home with an injury by her eye when she pulled back to hard on one of those little garden rakes.)

From Blog Favorites #3
Sarah, Angela and I had a great time entertaining and playing with Anabelle who was such a sweetie the whole night.

From Blog Favorites #3
Yikes - I'm surprised Anabelle wasn't crying when I look at Sarah and Angela frozen in time. That would be scary! (o:

We Heart Portland!

Saturday, we went on an adventure downtown. It was FABULOUS! The sun was shining and there was so much to see, taste, smell, etc. Portland is truly a feast for the senses! There are bumper stickers that you see around town a lot that say, "Keep Portland Weird". This sticker seemed to apply with many of the things we saw. Portland has a lot of weird people - we like weird! (O: Here's a visual tour for your enjoyment!

Our journey began on the MAX train and how lucky were we to hop right on the train next to this girl! As soon as I saw her I was so glad I brought my big old camera rather than the point and shoot. It took me a while to work up the courage to ask her to take some pictures - I hate being annoying - but when you dress in newspaper you're asking for it, right? (O: I knew I would regret it if I didn't ask. So we did this impromptu photo shoot in literally about 1 minute because our stop was coming soon. She was so cute and so nice. I got her e-mail address and later found out she and her friend were just like to go out and do things to be "weird". She said tons of people asked for pictures with her that day. Here are mine of Rebecca the newspaper girl. (O:

When we got off the train at our stop, Natalie said, "I love going downtown! We don't have newspaper girls at home!"

This next series of pictures is called, "How many goofy poses can you do with a great big mask statue?" Let's find out...

We LOVE this funny little pizza place on Burnside...

From BlogFavorites

You can't tell in the picture, but it is in a section of the building that is only about 5 feet wide at the end. The widest part of the restaurant is maybe 12 feet. It's such a funny little place and the food is sooo yummy. It's simply called, "Eat Pizza".

The girls love to sit by the window and watch people and cars. It's downtown, so people watching is really entertaining sometimes!

The owner gave the girls a couple plain pizza boxes and colored Sharpies to entertain themselves while we waited.

We had a few slices of pizza leftover and decided to share it with a homeless man we saw across the street. The girls were so excited to do something nice for him. The look on Natalie's face was priceless when he said thank you. They were worried about him when we walked past him on the way to the pizza place.

This sign caught my attention as we were walking back to the train. It made me laugh out loud. Look closer...

I think this is a sticker someone stuck over what is really supposed to be there. (o:

After lunch, we rode the MAX over to the Portland Saturday's Market. This is truly a cultural experience. It is sooo fun and there's so much to look at there. The girls were hoping to see the "gold" guy (you know, those people that paint themselves from head to toe). He wasn't there, but there were plenty of entertainers and other interesting things to see. And yes, those are my girls in Tie Dye dresses. We always joke about the plethora of tie dye shops at the market. They even have tie dye underwear! Anyway, we couldn't resist joining in the fun and the girls looked so cute. Sarah chose to get a wooden flute instead.

A quick snapshot of some girls walking around in snazzy outfits. Angela was very curious about them especially when they were walking by us and suddenly burst into song.

This little booth was truly a gem. At least we thought so. There's a lot of kooky booths like the face sculpting one next door that looked super creepy and then there's those that really have something. We LOVED these handcrafted clocks. They were so creative! We decided to get one, but it took FOREVER to decide which one! Here's the one I finally picked.

And we got it $14 off (o: Another nice thing about the market - haggling! Isn't it great? I love whimsical things and these clocks fit the bill.
