Utah Trip Day #4 Insane Lines, Sunburns, Thrills and Princess Cakes

From Blog Favorites #2

Well, we thought we were being so smart to wait until Tuesday to buy our all day passes on the mountain. (Alpine slide, Alpine Coaster, Zip Line, Climbing Wall, Trampolines, etc.) Everything looked fairly easy going on Monday, but Tuesday about a million girls from all over were in town for a big softball tournament and all of them and their families and coaches came on the same day! It was so busy, we regretted all day not getting our passes on Monday. Oh well, c'est la vie. At least we had good company while waiting in the lines. (Minus the obnoxious girls standing behind us on one ride - telling tales of how far they had gone with boys. Lovely. It made me miss my awesome young women.) Anyhow...

On the first run down - doing the alpine slide, Natalie and Angela were pretty nervous. Angela was crying as she sat with Herman* on the sled and she was trying to get off. Natalie was with me and was asking a million questions. "Will we go fast?", "How steep is it?", "Can you fall off?", "Do people sometimes crash?"

As the two of us went down very slowly and she gripped my arms for dear life, I knew this was going to be a scary ride for her, but I also knew that it was mostly because it was her first time. My girls are often skittish at first doing new things, but then usually figure out quickly that it's fun! So on we went . . . a little faster. I warned her when the hills were coming and she'd squeeze tighter and scream and yell to slow down. As we came around one corner a huge gopher or something about that size jumped right by the track. It surprised me and made me jump and after the stressful ride already, Natalie just lost it and let out a blood-curdling scream. The timing was hilarious. I laughed so hard I cried all the way down, and after Natalie got over wondering why her mom was laughing when she was so evidently scared out of her mind, she started laughing too. And by the end she was yelling out, "Let's do it again!"

Nat and I had so much fun on the Alpine Slide we decided to be Alpine Coaster buddies too. This one went even faster and I was afraid about halfway down that she was going to puke so we didn't end with laughter, we ended with a sigh of relief!

Natalie is a monkey - she LOVES to climb. This was tons of fun for her.

Kaleb and Russ cruising down. Luckily, on this trip, Russ decided to stay on the track! But Tina thought it would be fun to try dropping her cell phone onto the track from the ski lift to see what would happen. (J/K - it fell out of her pocket.) We watched my mom and sister run right over it - funny timing. Somehow, Russ and Tina found all the pieces later that night and put it together and IT WORKED!

One more funny, random ski lift story - on some of the trees toward the top, there are bead necklaces strewn all over that people have thrown after Mardi Gras celebrations. One one trip up, Tina and I were admiring all the variety of colors when I noticed a lovely different contribution to the tree decor. A black, lacey bra! It was hard to spot on the dark tree, but sure enough - there was a bra there. I wonder what the story is behind that - on second thought - let's not go there!

Waiting for 1 hour and 15 to get on the Alpine Coaster in the burning sun. Almost all of us got a sunburn somewhere during this long, hot wait! We had to keep sending Herman* or my brothers down for drinks and bathroom trips to survive.

Everyone baking on the fence which kept them from withering down to the ground.

After a long day we were pooped! The hotel was showing "Meet the Robinsons" on a huge inflatable screen by the pool. We thought this sounded fun, but by the time I got dinner finished (it was my night) we were too tired! Good thing the kids could watch from the window. It was the next best thing. (o: You can see the screen by Danny's head.

Aunt Kimmie is so sweet. She wanted to make Angela a special birthday cake to celebrate her 5th birthday while we were in Utah (her birthday would be the following Sunday). Angela told her she wanted a princess cake - and princess cake she got! She was sooo excited! Thanks Kimmie! This was a very time consuming project!
