Change of Plans

From BlogFavorites

Our first official day of summer, after school got out, I made plans for a fun outing. A few weeks earlier I was telling one of my young women buds about Duyck's Peachy Pig Farm in Cornelius. She thought it sounded so fun, so we planned on the first day of the first official week of summer to go on a field trip there with my girls. We put it on the calendar weeks before. On the day of I kept getting hilarious texts from Katie about how excited she was and how she was wearing overalls and needed to braid her hair for the farm trip. She definitely looked like she was ready for a farm field trip when I picked her and Eliza (her little sis - Sarah's friend) up. I LOVE how Kaitlyn is so enthusiastic about everything! She is so fun. We had our picnic lunches packed and were off.

When we pulled up to the farm we were very sad to see a CLOSED sign. )o: What??? It hadn't even occurred to me to check to see if they would be open.

My heart went out to my enthusiastic farm fan friend sitting next to me. Luckily, all the girls were flexible and were ready for a different adventure. Katie led us to a new park called 53rd Avenue park. Boring name, very cool park! We had our picnic there and enjoyed a lovely afternoon together!

Everything at this park seemed to be "thinking outside the box". It wasn't your typical playground equipment. Even the 'slide' was wonky! It made me nervouse and Angela freaked out a bit at the top. Once she got the hang of it, though, she loved it. You ride down it stradling the slide. Crazy!

That afternoon, I had to make a stop at Winco to buy some BBQ supplies for a dinner with our good friends, the Binghams, who just moved to our ward. (Yay!) Katie and Eliza came along for a shopping adventure.

Eliza and Sarah were having some silly Kodak moments at the store. The cashier was getting a kick out of our entertaining group 'o girls.

On our drive, I noticed a field full of blooming flowers/weeds. It looked so fun to get pictures in. I was in luck because my car full of girls was feeling spontaneous too! We parked across the street and ran into this field 'o flowers. (Am I feeling a little Irish today?) I wish I had my nicer camera, but we still got some cute pictures. So even though our day went completely different than planned, we ended up making some great memories! And Katie looked adorable in her overalls and braids wherever she went!

Birthday Fun

From BlogFavorites

From BlogFavorites

My birthday fell on a Saturday this year! The best day of the week. We had a pretty busy day starting with our ward primary talent show. The kids LOVE this annual tradition and it's so fun to see the variety of talents shared. Sarah has the cutest activity days leader ever. My good friend, Angie, for the second year in a row, choreographed a cute dance for the 8-10 year olds. She goes all out and finds matching shirts on clearance and makes cute props. Last year they did the Macarena. This year they danced to the Lollipop song. Thus, the adorable lollipop props. The dance was a big hit and such a fun experience for the girls. Angie really makes activity days special for the girls, we are so lucky!

Natalie and Angela did a joke routine including some knock knock jokes, which they love these days. They did such a cute job and got lots of laughs.

Sarah wanted to do magic tricks with her magic set and was hilarious. Not only did her tricks go well, she had quite the showmanship. At the beginning she announced she was the "great Sarah" and that she was the 7th greatest magician in the world. Or something like that. We had rehearsed some things to help the flow of her routine, but she ad libbed a bunch of funny stuff when she got up in front of the crowd. What a nut.

After the show, we got some lunch at Quizno's and then Chuck* had to go help a family in our ward move. So I worked on finishing a project I never finished during the week - canning homemade strawberry jam. Earlier in the week, I had received my order of 40 lbs of Oregon strawberries! We have a local farm that picks them, washes them, hulls them and slices them, puts them in a big, old bucket and delivers them the next day to one location. Then we go pick them up at whoever volunteers their house. It is the best deal ever. It cost a little over $1 per pound! And they taste sweeter than any California strawberries you get at the store. No offense California friends. (o:

My canning set up. This is a messy job, but getting over a year's worth of delicious jam is worth it! This picture makes me laugh. My nice, new stainless steel microwave and my dumb, old, mismatched stove that I can't stand except for one thing; I can CAN on it. We have looked for over a year and I can't decide what to do. I want to continue being able to can, but the new electric stove/ovens are all flat tops (unless you get a low-end stove) which they don't recommend canning on. My other option is to pay to put a gas line in, which I'm pretty sure will be expensive. So I continue with my annoying stove, with burners that don't fit.(Because the company decided to go with sizes that aren't standard. DUMB.) Oh well, there's worse things in life...

When I finished canning, I thought for sure Chuck* would be home. The move took much longer than I thought, so the girls and I went for a walk/bike ride several times around the block waiting to go play. Later that night, we went out to dinner and saw the new Toy Story 3 movie, which was hilarious. I love the Toy Story movies - my favorite part was when Ken was modeling all his outfits for Barbie. Oh man, the whole Ken/Barbie storyline in the movie was probably my favorite part. I LOVED playing with Barbie and Ken dolls when I was growing up. All the funny outfits reminded me of playing with my mom and aunts old Barbie's that my grandma saved and some of the hilarious ones my mother-in-law saved that she still has - I don't know where/when she got them, but there's some glittery silver Ken pieces that are priceless. The Ken fashion show in the movie just hit home to me.

So, it ended up being a pretty nice birthday. Chuck* and I also got to go on a birthday date the night before to get dinner and do some birthday shopping. He really wanted to get me an IPad, which looked fun, but was not the most practical thing for a mom who doesn't have much extra time to surf the net, play games or read digital books. I love to read and that part of it was the most intriguing to me, but I can read the old fashioned way for now. Plus, has anyone tried typing on the keypad on that thing? It's hard!

So I opted for a new camera. Yep, I know what you're thinking, doesn't she have enough camera stuff? After using my point and shoot for a year since I dropped it in the sand at the beach last summer (it still worked, but if you tried to zoom it shut down) I decided it would be nice to have a new one. I don't always like to lug around my big, expensive camera on every outing.

So that was my 35th birthday. I'm getting O-L-D! What the heck??

Whitney!

From BlogFavorites

This is Whitney! She's been one of our most favorite babysitters since we moved to this house 4 years ago. Now she is going off to college! We are so excited for her, but will miss her very much! I love that she often brings a cute craft, paints the girls' nails or brings fun movies that we don't have. And I consider her a good friend too. I got to be in YW with her for 3 of the last 4 years and she is cream of the crop. She will be a wonderful mom someday! We will miss you Whitney!

Last Day of School

From Blog Favorites #3
Sarah and Natalie were excited to give their bus driver, Frank, a little treat the morning of their last day of school. Several mornings we would be eating toast, often with strawberry jam when he came to pick up the girls. Most mornings we chat just a bit and he learned that I made homemade strawberry jam, which he said sounded so good. So, we decided to share some with him for a little end of year gift. He was always so friendly and took good care of the kids. He would notice when one of the girls was sick and would ask how they were. He is retiring so this was his last day of work. Look at that big smile! (O:

Some other moms and I put together a big wagon full of school supplies to give to Mrs. B. along with a big Barnes and Noble gift card. We found out earlier in the year she had spent some of her own money to buy school supplies for our children so we wanted to give back to her! She was overwhelmed. It was so fun!

This gives some indication of the type of weather we were having in the middle of June! The kids were pretty bummed - usually the last day, Mr. Rosetti puts all the cafeteria tables out on the blacktop for a fun outdoor lunch - but it was too cold! Crazy!

We love Mrs. Smith, one of the recess teachers. Her Eskimo coat on June 17th cracks me up! It wasn't THAT cold! But she spends a lot more time standing outside than me so who am I to judge? (o: She is such a sweetheart and really loves the kids as you can see.

This is Tylin - she was one of my cute YW and our neighbor and friend. (o: At the end of the last day of school, there is a tradition for the everyone to come out and line the halls to cheer for the 6th graders. The principal makes and announcement when it's time. We waited anxiously by Natalie's class for the 6th graders to come down the stairs. It sounds cheesy, especially because I don't even have a 6th grader yet, but it makes me a little teary. The moms of the 6th graders take pictures and cry a little. Some of the 6th graders are crying and most are just really excited! (o: It's a neat tradition. They also have a special breakfast and slideshow in the morning. We were excited to cheer on our 6th grade friends.

Oops - I overexposed this one a bit, but had to include Mrs. Elison - the greatest music teacher ever! She does such a fabulous job, I have been so impressed with her. She genuinely loves the kids too. At the 3rd grade end of year music performance - which was so adorable - she got choked up as she talked about her students. It was very sweet.

Mr. Rodriguez does everything - helps in Kindergarten, oversees reading groups (Natalie was with him every day for part of reading), translates in Spanish, does crossing guard duty, and anything else the staff need him for. He is great! The kids think he's so funny. Natalie was so excited to give him a great big candy bar because she knows he loves candy!

Silly Kitty

From Blog Favorites #4
Look where I found Twilight when I left our cabinet open above the desk. She gets into all kinds of crazy places. What a silly. She's been closed into cupboards by accident more than once. We'll notice a little scratching noise from inside and realize - sometimes quite a while later!
